Theory

Theory is the code or language that we use to write on the machine. (We call it writing instead of typing.) Theory is the foundation of your work as a court reporter which makes choosing and learning theory an integral first step in your court reporting journey.

At CareerLuv we teach Magnum Steno a theory created by World Record holder Mark Kislingbury. This is a brief-focused theory, designed to get you writing faster and shorter more quickly than other theories.

There are different companies that sell steno machines (writers). You can purchase or rent from them. It is fine to buy an older refurbished writer, especially as a student. Make sure that your writer is able to connect to a computer so that you can use it in connection with the software that translates your keystrokes into words.
